From Character Name to Endgame: Building an Identity in WoW Forever

Character Name to Endgame

Before you swing a sword or spend a talent point, you type a name. It’s the smallest decision in an MMORPG and somehow the one you’ll stare at thousands of times. World of Warcraft: Forever, which launches November 4, 2026, changes how that decision works — every character carries two names instead of one. But a name only gets you past the character screen. What turns it into an identity other people recognise is everything that happens across the next 60 levels.

What makes a name work in WoW Forever

Forever drops the old server list, so names are handled across a much wider pool of players. That changes which names are still available and how much thought the second one deserves.

Two names, one region-wide identity

Every Forever character gets a first name and a second name. The full combination has to be unique across your region, which means two players can both be “Thalen” as long as the rest of the name differs. The second name isn’t optional, either — you can’t leave the field blank.

A few things worth checking before you commit:

  • Players are grouped by ruleset (Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, with Hardcore arriving later) instead of by server. Claim a full name on one ruleset and it’s taken across the others in your region, including for you.
  • Early Name Reservation runs October 27 through November 3, 2026, on a first-come, first-served basis for eligible upgrade purchases, covering up to three characters.
  • Standard naming rules still apply. Splitting a restricted word across the two fields won’t slip past the filter.
  • You can set whether you see other players’ full names or only their first names.

Fitting the name to the character you’re making

Here’s where the second name actually earns its place. A dwarf hunter called Brann Stonetrack reads like someone who tracks things for a living. Brann Xx reads like a placeholder.

Say the name out loud before you lock it. People will type it in whispers, shout it in dungeon runs, and eventually put it on a guild roster. Odd letter swaps that look sharp in a font get annoying fast when nobody can spell them.

One mistake that catches a lot of players: the joke name. It’s funny at level 12. It’s less funny when you’re leading a 20-player raid at 60 and introducing yourself as Chunkybacon. Friend groups sometimes solve the whole problem by sharing one second name across their characters, which also makes the group easy to spot in chat.

Race and class: the part you can’t retype later

A name can be changed. Your race and class mostly can’t, and they shape how the character plays from the first quest to the last raid boss.

Faction choice can shorten your class list

The Skyborne, Forever’s new race, make this obvious. They’re available to both sides, but the faction you pick at creation decides part of your class list. Warrior, Hunter, Rogue and Druid are open to both; Horde-aligned Windshapers can also be Shaman, while Alliance-aligned High Order can also be Mage. Paladin, Priest and Warlock aren’t on either list. Skyborne also start on their own island, Zephras Isle, for levels 1 to 12, and the race sits behind a paid upgrade pack rather than the base subscription.

If you’d rather not pay extra, Forever adds six race and class pairings Classic never allowed — Gnome Priest, Human Hunter and Dwarf Shaman for the Alliance, plus Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin for the Horde. Those come with a normal subscription.

Class also sets your pace. In Classic, Mages and Hunters cleared 1–60 fastest while Warriors took noticeably longer, which is part of why some players look into wow forever boosting instead of repeating the slowest route on a third alt. Just know what a service does and doesn’t cover: it won’t grant the Skyborne race, and it won’t hold a name for you.

Character Name to Endgame

The climb to 60 is where the name starts meaning something

Forever keeps the level cap at 60 permanently, so the 1–60 stretch isn’t a hallway to skip. It’s most of the game.

There’s no flying and no level scaling, which sounds like a restriction until you realise what it does. Zones have an order again. Running into a level 40 area at 28 goes badly, and that matters, because the world stays dangerous in a way modern WoW mostly smoothed over.

Blizzard has added more than 1,000 new quests across original Azeroth, four new zones including Mount Hyjal and Riverglades, and nine new dungeons spread through the levelling range. So two characters reaching 60 can genuinely have taken different routes there.

Gear, looks, and whether you even want transmog on

Gear in Forever does two jobs: it makes your character stronger, and it makes them recognisable from across a city.

Transmog exists, but it’s opt-in. Pick the Classic preset on first login and the system starts switched off, which also hides other players’ outfits — you’ll see their actual equipped gear instead. You can turn it on later at a transmogrifier in certain cities.

The detail most people miss: appearances keep getting collected even while transmog is disabled, and collections are account-wide across rulesets (Hardcore being the exception). Dungeon drops are generous here too, since everyone in the party learns the appearance even if they lose the roll. Turning the system off now doesn’t cost you anything later.

Professions, camping and goals that outlast a gear upgrade

Professions carry more weight in Forever than they did in Classic. Over 600 new recipes have been added, and crafting feeds directly into one of the new systems.

Camping is the clearest example. The old cooking fire has been reworked into a campsite other players can use, holding up to three objects by default, with cooking upgrades raising that to five or ten. Each profession has its own campsite objects, and every player can contribute one, sharing a one-hour cooldown. A roadside stop becomes repairs, a vendor and a profession workspace for whoever’s nearby.

Then there’s Legacy — 65 challenges worth one point each, spread across categories like dungeons, raids, PvP and tradeskills. Points are earned account-wide, but each character spends its own allocation, up to 16 points at launch across three trees. Levelling an alt doesn’t start from zero on the perks side.

Dungeons, guilds and PvP: where other people learn your name

Solo progress builds a character. Group content builds a reputation.

Dungeons come first, and Blizzard’s stated goal is all 27 specs being viable in dungeons and raids, so an unusual class and spec combination shouldn’t lock you out of groups. Raids open December 9, 2026, with Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit and Onyxia’s Lair, and every raid boss has a chase item attached.

PvP runs alongside it rather than after it. The original battlegrounds return, joined by Darkspear Islands, a new 15-versus-15 map. Seasons refresh through 2027.

Guilds are the quiet part of this. In a game without servers, your guild tag and your full name are what make you findable, and the people you run Tuesday nights with are the ones who’ll remember both.

Putting it together

A name is a prediction. Six months in, it’s a record — of the raid you cleared, the profession you maxed, the battleground your guild kept winning. Pick something you’ll still want to read at 60, then go earn the rest.

FAQ

Can I change my name later in WoW Forever?
Blizzard hasn’t published full details on name changes in Forever. Pick carefully during creation or reservation rather than planning around a later change.

Do I have to buy anything to play WoW Forever?
No. The base game comes with a standard WoW subscription or Game Time. Upgrade packs grant the Skyborne race and extra items.

Does Forever ever go past level 60?
No. Blizzard plans to keep expanding level 60 with new zones, dungeons, raids and systems rather than raising the cap.

Is my name taken if someone used it on another ruleset?
If the full two-part name is claimed anywhere in your region, it’s unavailable on the other rulesets too. A different second name solves it.
